Restructuring Urban Employment and Poverty.

The Case of Suriname

Jack Menke, 1998

This book examines the impact of global and national economic restructuring on urban employment in Suriname during two decades, as well as the emergent poverty and survival strategies pursued. The in depth data include the first,  second and third jobs, resulting in a complete overview of employment, household income and poverty. Informality, an integrated feature of the heterogeneous employment structure, ranges from civil servants to the selfemployed. The effect of informality on poverty is compared with the effect of international remittances. This book contributes to theories on urban economies in developing countries.
